The Parent-Child Mother Goose Program was initially developed to help parents with children who were in danger of neglect and abuse develop basic components of attachment.

The tradition of children's oral literature and storytelling was harnessed to a serious end: supporting parents and promoting healthy emotional development and literacy in children.

• A Smooth Road to London Town: Songs from the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program, a CD of 27 songs for parents and caregivers
• Zoom, Zoom, Zoom and Other Rhymes to Play with Your Baby, a 36-page book of twenty-eight rhymes to read to toddlers

The founders of the program, author Celia Barker Lottridge and storyteller Katherine Grier, found that the shared words, actions, images and feelings of rhymes and stories enhanced the relationship between parents and their children and gave them long-lasting resources. 

Sharing rhymes, songs, and stories accompanied by loving touch and play creates a sense of emotional engagement and mutual pleasure. The stories, folk tales and rhymes  used in the Program are chosen for their rich images and interactive potential.

Children delight in language games and in the adults' attention. The caregivers take pleasure in being able to engage the children. For pre-readers hearing rhymes and stories told aloud is a key to the structure of words and language, setting the stage for learning to read and write.

Originally developed for training parents, the program has been expanded and now offers recognized benefits to all caregivers, including fathers, grandparents, nannies, and the children themselves. The program is also a wonderful addition to infant-parent programs or parent support groups.
