The Black Book of Colors

(SKU: 02021A-B-X)

$15.00

This book was written by Menena Cottinand and illustrated by Rosana Faria, can help children understand the world of the blind through the story and by the textured illustrations that can be felt on the pages. The text encourages children to develop a new appreciation for color, taste, sound, and smell and helps them use their senses to paint mental pictures.

The book introduces Thomas who “likes all the colors because he can hear them and smell them and touch them and taste them." Thomas can’t see them but he can describe what each color seems like to him such as yellow (“tastes like mustard), red ("hurts when he finds it on his scraped knee"), brown ("crunches under his feet like fall leaves") and so on, but what the reader sees is all black. In Thomas's world, "Black is the king of all colors. It is as soft as silk when his mother hugs him and her hair falls in his face."

The poetic text combined with white text on black pages, with Braille above, and embossed or raised black line images of flowers, grass, falling rain etc., this book attempts to convey the experience of blindness. This book offers blind "readers" a chance to "see" the pictures and its pages and also provides a novel experience for the sighted though touch and language.

Recommended for children ages 5 and up.

Written by Menena Cottinand and illustrated by Rosana Faria, both Venezuelan.
